Daily Devotional April 10 - Whom Say Ye That Jesus Is?

"And Jesus went out, and His disciples, into the towns of Caesarea Philippi: and by the way he asked His disciples, saying unto them, Whom do men say that I am? And they answered, John the Baptist: but some say, Elias; and others' One of the prophets. And He saith unto them, But whom say ye that I am? And Peter answereth and saith unto Him, Thou art the Christ." Mark 8:27-29

If you were to ask around, maybe twenty people you have never met, and you asked the question, whom do you say that Jesus is? You would get a variety of answers, just like when Jesus asked His disciples. You will only get the right answer from those who have met Jesus. When Jesus says, "But whom say ye that I am?" it gets a little more personal. Whom do you say that Jesus is? Within the answer to this question lies the essence of faith. No matter what you say, it does matter what you believe.

You can say Jesus is the Christ and not believe it in your heart. I hope you can say that Jesus is the Christ, the Son of God, very God and that He is your Lord, creator and sovereign. When Peter said, "Thou art the Christ," it was from his inner man knowing this truth, wrought by faith and then turned into belief. Peter was able, after he had faith to believe and then after he believed, to receive by revelation of the indwelling Holy Spirit that Jesus is the Christ. It is the same for you.

Acknowledging that Jesus was a prophet, was a good man, was a Jew, did great things, maybe even walked on water isn't the same as knowing that He is the Christ. Even acknowledging that Jesus was special and that He could perform miracles and that He was born of a virgin birth isn't the same as knowing that He is the Christ. Knowing that He is the Christ means that whatever teaching, reading, praying or worshiping you have done has been revealed to your soul by God.

There are many people who have the same teaching as you, they have read just as many scriptures and they have prayed and showed up for many a worship service that do not know that Jesus is the Christ. If you aren't sure, ask Jesus to reveal Himself to you. Jesus loves to be invited into your soul.
